PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR GREAT GARDENS TO VISIT (UK)

Painswick Rococo in Gloucestershire - the only garden of its kind in Britain - a hidden six-acre garden in a valley, lovingly restored in the last 25 years. Famous for its spectacular snowdrop displays in winter.

Sussex Prairies (above) - a garden that's been developed with great love by Paul and Pauline McBride, near Henfield in Sussex. Planted in Piet Oudolf style and open on several weekends each year, but Pauline also runs a wonderful Bed & Breakfast (and if I didn't live so close, I'd be regular visitor!).

Little Sparta, Scotland. Ian Hamilton Finlay's amazing garden within easy driving distance of Edinburgh. An extraordinary property, with more than 200 of the artist's works, with landscapes you'll never forget.

The Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden in Oxted, Surrey - another of my personal favourites because the sculptures change and the garden is wonderful.

The World Garden at Lullingstone Castle in Kent is the vision of modern-day plant hunter, Tom Hart Dyke, who was kidnapped by guerillas in 2000, while looking for orchids in Central America. Fortunately, his captives let him go and since returning home, Tom has created this amazing garden within the walls of the ancient kitchen garden at his parents ancestral home.

Tremenheere Sculpture Garden near Penzance, Cornwall - located near the end of England, this is a garden to watch. It's the brainchild of local doctor, Neil Armstrong. It enjoys a spectacular location overlooking St Michael's Mount and is very much a garden in the making.

Veddw in Wales - brainchild of Anne Wareham and Charles Hawes.  Gardens don't get much better than this if you're looking for the unusual and eccentric. Anne is also creator and editor the website ThinkinGardens which is just what it says ... a different approach to gardens and well worth subscribing to if you want to read garden writing with attitude.
